Performing GS-441524 Subcutaneous Injection

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

Subcutaneous (subcut) injections are a common way to administer medications, such as insulin, certain vaccines, and other medications that need to be absorbed into the bloodstream relatively slowly. GS-441524 for FIP treatment falls under this category of medications. Here are the steps to perform a subcutaneous injection:

Materials You Will Need:

  1. The FurPurr GS441524 in a vial or pre-filled syringe.

  2. Alcohol swab or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol.

  3. A clean, flat surface.

  4. A subcutaneous injection needle (ideally 21-23 gauge needle).

  5. Medical Latex gloves (optional).

Procedure:

  1. Put on the Latex Gloves or Wash Your Hands: •Start by wearing the medical latex gloves. •If you are not using gloves, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water and dry them with a clean towel.

  2. Prepare Medication: •If you're using a vial, remove the protective cap and wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab. •If you're using a pre-filled syringe, remove the cap from the needle.

  3. Prepare the Injection Site: •Common injection sites include the top neck area between shoulders, top of thighs, or shoulders. It is strongly advised not to inject in the same spot every single day. •Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab using a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward. Let it air dry completely.

  4. Prepare the Needle and Syringe: •Remove the needle cover or cap, taking care not to touch the needle. •Hold the syringe like a pencil or a dart.

  5. Inject the Medication: •Using your other hand, pinch the skin at the injection site to create a small fold (approximately 1-2 inches wide). •Hold the syringe at a 90-degree angle (perpendicular) to the pinched skin. •Insert the needle quickly and firmly into the pinched skin, all the way to the hub of the needle. •Push the plunger down slowly and steadily to inject the FIP medication. •Keep the skin pinched during the injection.

  6. Withdraw the Needle: •Once the medication is injected, release the pinch on the skin. •Remove the needle at the same angle it was inserted. •Do not rub the injection site after removing the needle.

  7. Dispose of Sharps: •Place the used needle and syringe in a designated sharps disposal container immediately.

  8. Post-Injection Care: •Apply gentle pressure with a clean cotton ball or gauze if there's any bleeding. •Do not rub or massage the injection site. •Record the date, time, and location of the injection in a medication log or as advised by your veterinarian.

  9. Take off the Gloves and Wash Your Hands Again: •After the injection is complete, take off the gloves and dispose of them, then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

NOTE: Always follow your veterinarian's instructions and consult them if you have any questions or concerns about performing subcutaneous injections. Proper technique and hygiene are essential to ensure the effectiveness and safety of GS441524.
